Arowana fish farming is a great option for those who like a challenge. Also known as the ‘Dragon’ Fish for its similar and unique slender body and distinctive reflective scales, the results of successful breeding can be extraordinary. According to Chinese tradition, a dragon is the symbol of prosperity, strength and power, and many believe that the Arowana fish helps ward off evil and misfortune.
Arowana fish farming is not easy and it is one of the most expensive fish in the world due to high demand but low supply. Their breeding cycle is only about 1-2 times a year and they take an average of 3-5 years to reach full maturity.
Arowana in general will eat almost anything, however it is important to have a good variety in their diet. Baby Arowana Fish should be fed around 3 times a day and adults only once a day. Particularly large Arowana may even be fed once every two days. Favorites at Arowana Fish Breeding include brine shrimp, black worms, and even small fish. When they are bigger, you can try bigger fish.
Due to this rather meaty diet, arowanas tend to produce a lot of waste. Therefore, special care must be taken when cleaning the tank. At a minimum, 25-33% of the water should be changed weekly, but the recommended rate is 20% twice a week. Keep pH values neutral and keep temperatures on the high end, around 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Be careful, too high a temperature will shorten their lifespan and too cold a temperature can kill them completely.
When considering breeding Arowana keep in mind that these fish will grow to be at least 24 to 30 inches and some can even grow as long as 48 inches. You can also keep Arowana fish alone in their tank, as other fish can become their mid-day snack! Also, make sure the top of the tank is sealed properly, as Arowanas love to swim to the top and are able to cleanly jump out of the tank.
When done correctly, breeding Arowana fish can result in an exquisite and mystical fish that will live for up to 20 years, giving your aquarium an extraordinary sight for years to come!
