used for a Victoria Falls safari
Victoria Falls, also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya or ‘the smoke that thunders’, is one of Africa’s biggest and most popular tourist attractions. It’s wide and high, forming the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and is a must-see for those on an African safari.
There are a number of ways to get to the world-famous waterfalls. Flying is the most common way to arrive, but you can also drive or take a train from the Southern African countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The best time to visit Victoria Falls safari is in June and July, when the water flow is still strong but not so high. The weather is also usually milder and there’s plenty of sunshine. This is also the best time to go on a Chobe River safari in Botswana as the water levels are lower and game viewing is better.
What type of transportation is used for a Victoria Falls safari?
The easiest and most affordable way to get to Victoria Falls is by plane, although you can also travel to the town of Livingstone on the Zambian side and transfer from there. There are also a few buses that run from Livingstone to Victoria Falls, but most tourists prefer to book a tour in advance.
The best way to get around Victoria Falls is on foot, or by bicycle. Renting a bike is easily done from the information center on Park Way, and it’s a great way to explore the town and see more of the surrounding area.
A hop-on-hop-off bus is also a good way to get around and explore some of the hotspots in the town. The Bamba Bus is a fun and cost-effective way to get around, with routes taking in all the major spots from Victoria Falls to local shopping areas, restaurants and bars etc.
Visiting the Falls is easy and inexpensive from both sides of the border, and there’s no need to book a guide to see them. National parks are situated on both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of the falls, with lots of trails, vistas and viewpoints to explore.
There’s an abundance of wildlife around the falls, so it’s not uncommon to spot elephants, warthogs and monkeys as you walk around. However, it’s not advisable to venture out into the park after dark.
If you want a bit of adventure, head to the top of the falls for an incredible view from a microlight or helicopter flight. Gorge swinging, bungee jumping off the bridge and swimming in Devil’s Pool are other adrenaline-filled activities. You can also hire a canoe for an exciting trip down the Zambezi River.
Unlike other parts of Zimbabwe, you can easily rent a car in the Falls town. This is a cheaper option than hiring a taxi and can be used to visit other parts of the country, such as the Victoria Falls Museum and nearby curio markets.
