The bearded dragon food that you need to give your pet ranges from insects, fruits, live animals to vegetables. They have a decent appetite and are not very picky eaters, but there are some foods that you should never give your Beardie because even such a food can cause a fatal reaction.
While it’s okay to give your pet certain insects, you shouldn’t give him a firefly (aka firefly) for any reason. The firefly has a chemical, luminescence, in its body that will kill a Beardie.
Other bearded dragon foods, while not immediately toxic like firefly, can lead to a chain of events that will kill your pet. Foods like insects with hard shells do not move through the Beardie’s digestive system and end up causing an impaction to develop. An impaction occurs when food gets stuck.
Never give your bearded dragon food that could be contaminated by contact with any type of pesticide. That means don’t go picking up food for your Beardie from the garden. While Beardies love to gobble up bugs and are considered a staple in the diet, not all bugs are safe for them.
Some spiders are deadly to Beardie and some are not, so it’s better to avoid them than take chances. Also, avoid iceberg lettuce because it can upset your stomach and cause diarrhea that can lead to dehydration and death. Avoid any food that is too large for the pet, as well as furry rodents, as the fur is hard on their digestive system.
