Now that you have decided to buy a leopard gecko as a pet, what are the best leopard gecko foods available to feed them? Since your new pet is an insectivore, the obvious choice will be insects. Which insects offer the most nutritional value for your Leo but also don’t cost an arm and a leg to buy? Four different insects come to mind when thinking of different leopard gecko foods. They are crickets, mealworms, lobsters, and wax worms. Sounds delicious right?
The cricket
Crickets are the best choice to feed your Leo because they are readily available and provide a highly nutritious meal. There are many different types of crickets to choose from. Some different types of crickets that you can feed your pet are: brown crickets, black crickets, or banded crickets. Each of these types of crickets is high in protein and fat which provides excellent nutritional value. I would only recommend using store bought crickets because wild crickets may be covered in insecticides or fertilizers that will make your reptile sick.
meal worms
This is my second choice for leopard gecko foods that are high in nutritional value. Mealworms are readily available and provide a good fatty snack for your pet. Mealworms were the number one food for these reptiles until crickets became more popular. Still today, many breeders will only feed mealworms to their young because they are easy for the young to eat and provide excellent nutrition.
lobsters
Lobsters are a sweet treat for your Leo. Lobsters are on the more expensive side of leopard gecko foods, along with crickets and mealworms, they are more of a delicacy. Lobsters are high in protein, which is great if you want to fatten up your pet, but when given as the only food in their diet, your pet becomes a bit “addicted” to the treats. If you decide to feed your reptile lobsters, be sure to only feed it once every ten days so it continues to eat its healthy foods.
wax worms
Can you say fat? Feeding your pet wax worms is like giving your child a Twinkie. These worms are so full of fat that once eaten, your pet will quickly become addicted to the flavor and won’t want anything else if you feed them to many. Keep them as a special gift to show your Leo how much he loves him.
