The registration witness has a job that encompasses a number of responsibilities:
- Coordination of all well-related logging activities: before the job, during the job, and after the job
- Training any new utility records engineer on customer specific requirements
- Interact with logging engineer, operations geologist, well engineer, and drilling superintendents
- Pre-job, in-job, and post-job reporting of log targets and operations
- Participation and supervision of wireline logging operations on the platform
Once the utility is informed of the upcoming job and a logging crew is selected, a cable witness is also designated to cover the job. The core log is sent to the wireline logging program and reported to it by the operating company’s operating geologist or well engineer.
The logging witness is considered the leader of the logging service project team consisting of the utility logging engineer, his crew, and on-rig drilling superintendents. Onboard the rig, initial interactions between the logging witness, drilling superintendents and logging engineer must take place, obtaining consent on the following topics:
- Logging program and objectives
- What tools are required and what tools are available
- Review and discuss risk assessments and potential security issues.
- Preliminary details of the plan of record, including the expected start date and time
- Lessons learned from previous wells
The registration team has to check all of their equipment to ensure that all registration tools are in working condition and that no equipment needed for the job is missing. The logging engineer should report any problems with missing tools or equipment to the wireline witness and drilling superintendents on the rig. At this point, the registration program could be refined through discussions between the operating company and the utility with the registration token assuming an advisory role. Registration time estimates, registration submissions, and pre-job information sheets are also prepared before the job begins. Any discretion in forecasting the estimated logging time should be brought to the attention of the drilling superintendent to assist in advance planning and logistics. When the job begins, the landline witness has responsibilities that include:
- Logging Company Data Acquisition: Supervision and Quality Control
- Formatting and/or reformatting of data
- Downhole Sample Measurement Supervision: Testing and Coring Training
- Daily work reports
- Continuous evaluation of occupational risks
