Lord Hanuman is the Hindu divine deity who is revered in all places for his power, strength and wisdom. He is adored for his devotion to Lord Ram and it is Lord Hanuman’s selfless service that is the most treasured and adored quality of him.
Sometimes, we find that people are divided in their opinion about the origin of Lord Hanuman. Some say that Bajrang Bali is the son of the Queen and King of the monkeys. But most people believe that Lord Maruti was born to Anjana, an apsara, and Lord Vayu, who is the God of wind.
Therefore, Hanumanji is also called Pawanputra. Vayuputra is believed to have received the ability to fly from his father Vayu, the wind god.
A lot of divine and exciting folklore is associated with Pawanputra Hanuman. Once, Bajrang Bali saw the rising sun and, seeing its red color, mistook it for a fruit. Lord Hanuman jumped into the sky in an attempt to eat the sun. This induced fear among the gods, and Hanuman ji stopped when Lord Indra hurled his vajra (thunderbolt) at him.
The lightning strikes Lord Hanuman in the jaw, and that is where the origin of the name Hanuman is. Hanuman means someone with a disfigured jaw.
Hanumanji fell back to earth. He was in a coma, but his father, Lord Vayu, was very upset with what had happened. He went into a cave with Lord Hanuman, and the world was in danger of suffocating.
At this point Lord Indra apologized and blessed Hanuman ji with immortality. The gods came together to bless Hanuman ji. Although Bajrang Bali was possessed by great strength, he was mischievous as a child and to put an end to the mischief, the gods granted Hanuman ji to forget about his power.
But he will regain his powers when someone reminds him of it by praising him.
In the Ramayana epic, Jambavant, the king of bears, reminded Pawanputra of his power when there was a need to fly across the vast ocean to reach Lanka and find the whereabouts of Seeta Mata. Seeta Mata was kidnapped by the demon king Ravana and taken to Lanka. Being praised by Jambavant, Lord Hanuman regained his powers again and grew huge and powerful to fly across the ocean and reach Lanka.
Lord Hanuman is blessed with immortality and is also known as Chiranjeevi. But one of the most prolific episodes in Lord Hanuman’s life is when he flew to the Himalayas to find a herb that cured Lakshman of a serious wound he received in the war against Ravana. Since Hanumanji could not find the herb, he bought the entire mountain from Lanka.
