Humans use all five senses to communicate. People have two eyes, ears, nostrils, hands, and a mouth. It is safe to say, based on our construction, that most communication is non-verbal. Space and territory relate to non-verbal behavior due to how we respect or disrespect the space of another human being. Space is paramount in the way we receive and transmit non-verbal messages. The study of how we use and communicate space is called proxemics. All animals claim a geographic area and defend it by different means. Humans established territoriality by frequenting a space. Since confrontation is neither natural nor conducive to harmony, the claim of this space is easily transmitted and received. Humans are kings and queens of their own space all the time. Conflict arises when this space or territory is compromised. There are six different categories of territory; primary, secondary, public, home, interactional and corporal. They all give people an idea of the levels of space we need and need.
How does invasion and contamination have an effect on the violation of a person’s space?
Invasion is not always negative. Love, liking, respect and admiration are sometimes transmitted with invasion. Invasion has a negative effect on a person’s space when a violation or invasion occurs. A violation is when you use someone’s territory. For example, when I was little, I would jump on my parents’ bed and watch their TV when they were at work. It was a temporary invasion into their space. It was also unjustified. In college, for the first time, I wore my roommate’s cologne. A violation, unlike an invasion, is a temporary and unwarranted use of someone’s territory. An invasion is a permanent and intentional usurpation. This is when the invader forces his physical presence into another’s space. The colonization of America was an invasion of the natives. Pollution is the change of the environment of someone’s space or territory. Going into someone’s room and expelling gas is pollution. Spilling red Kool-aid on someone’s new car is pollution.
People use preventive measures like marking with coats, bags or books to avoid invasion. People also come to label with posters to avoid invasion. People can also use offensive displays of territorial claim to the word of invaders, tenure is also used to claim a territory. This is when a person has frequented a space for so long that they conveyed the right to a territory,
