In essence, hypnotism is the art of communication. Many see him as a creepy man with a ponytail waving his hand in front of your eyes and trying to make you feel sleepy. In its most useful form, hypnosis can be a powerful tool for personal change, an entertaining party trick, or even a career. Like everything, hypnosis is a series of skills that form a whole, so in my research I have found some basic skills that form the backbone of most hypnotic techniques. I will write a series of articles on these basic principles, this article will focus on fundamental basic models of the world.
models of the world
The first and one of the most important steps in hypnosis is to understand how people see the world. In order to communicate better with someone, you have to speak their language. Many people don’t realize that the way something is said has a lot to do with how it is received, and that there are countless ways to say something. So if we want to hypnotize someone, we must first know how to talk to them! The easiest way to categorize people would be as viewers, sensors, and listeners.
That is, some people are kinesthetic, some are visual, some are auditory. This relates to how best this person relates to the world around them. I have heard people say that they are visual learners, which could mean that they learn best when they see what is being taught right in front of them. If someone is an auditory learner, on the other hand, then they can listen to someone talk about something and easily learn it. So how do we use this as budding hypnotists? Easy! If we are able to quickly identify which of these three things a person is, then we can alter the way we speak to them and be halfway to winning the battle of effective communication.
How do we identify what a person is? Well, the clues will always be in the language. People use words that relate to their world view. Words like feel, hear or see. So a sentence like “I feel like this is the best fit for me” could tell me that the person speaking is a kinesthetic person (with a little consideration and careful listening!). A hearing person might say “This sounds like the best option.” for me” and a visual person might say “This option seems to be the best for me”
These are, of course, huge generalizations, but hey, it’s a start! So now that we know how this person sees the world, we can relate to them in a stronger way. Talk to pictures with pictures, paint pictures with your words, and use words like see and look. For kinesthetics we use feeling, so how hard or soft is a concept? How the thing feels in your hand, use words like feel and touch. And finally for the auditory ones, use sounds, how does it sound? Does this concept ring a bell? Things along these lines. The idea here is to temporarily change the way you talk and relate to the world. It may seem strange at first, but you’ll get used to it as you start to enjoy playing with the language in this way.
Applying this to hypnosis is a matter of using hypnotic suggestion but through a filter of what the particular person’s model of the world is. I will be writing more on the subject, so be sure to check my future articles. For more information on hypnosis, visit http://www.learnhipnoshq.com
